Aleema Khan Allege ‘Cruel Treatment’ in Jail, Target Army Chief

Aleema Khan

The family of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has stepped up its criticism of Pakistan’s military leadership, accusing Army Chief Asim Munir of responsibility for Khan’s worsening health in prison.

In a series of public statements and social media posts, Khan’s sisters — Aleema Khan and Noreen Khan Niazi — rejected recent medical reports about his condition and demanded immediate and independent medical access at Adiala Jail, where he has been lodged since 2023.

Family Questions Official Medical Reports

Aleema Khan dismissed claims circulating in the media regarding her brother’s treatment, stating that the family has no independent means to verify the care being provided inside prison. She said their personal physician, Dr. Asim Yousuf, had been in contact with jail doctors and was briefed on certain procedures allegedly carried out. However, she stressed that without direct access and external evaluation, there is “no way” to confirm the accuracy or adequacy of those medical interventions.

The family has reiterated its demand that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for a comprehensive examination by specialists under the supervision of their trusted doctor and in the presence of relatives.

Concerns about Khan’s health have intensified following the submission of a medical report related to his eye condition before the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Reports of possible vision complications have raised alarm among his supporters. However, his family argues that the medical documents cited publicly lack transparency and independent scrutiny.

Allegations of “Deliberate Cruelty”

Noreen Khan Niazi went further in her remarks, alleging that her brother has suffered irreversible damage to his right eye due to the treatment received in custody. She described the situation as “deliberate cruelty” and accused General Asim Munir of orchestrating what she termed an “inhumane” approach toward the jailed former leader.

In strongly worded statements, she referred to the current situation as operating under “Asim Law,” holding the army chief directly responsible for Khan’s declining health. Addressing Pakistan’s military establishment, she said, “The nation is wide awake and the world is watching,” framing the issue as one of national and international concern.

Planned Jail Visit and Press Briefing

Aleema Khan announced that family members would attempt to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail at 1:30 pm, asserting that access to him is a legal right. She also confirmed plans to hold a press conference outside the prison later in the afternoon to brief the media on his condition and their demands.

Imran Khan has remained incarcerated since 2023 following multiple convictions and ongoing legal cases. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has consistently alleged political victimisation and called for improved prison conditions, transparent medical evaluations, and fair legal proceedings.

Political and Legal Implications

The fresh allegations are likely to further intensify tensions between PTI supporters and Pakistan’s military establishment. While authorities have maintained that Khan is receiving appropriate medical care, the family’s public challenge has brought renewed scrutiny to prison conditions and the handling of high-profile detainees.

As political polarisation continues in Pakistan, Khan’s health has become a focal point in the broader debate about governance, civil-military relations, and the rule of law. With both domestic supporters and international observers closely monitoring developments, the controversy surrounding his medical treatment is unlikely to subside soon.
